Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: the danger of a single story
Hi everyone!Today I'd like to tell you about an Igbo writer from Nigeria that I've just discovered. Her name is Chimamanda Adichie and she's been labelled as the most prominent of a procession of acclaimed young anglophone authors that has succeeded in attracting a new generation of readers to African literature. She's now settled in the US and some of her stories show the cultural clash between the Western and African views of the world.
Listen to her on this interesting talk where Chimamanda tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice — and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding. She'll definitely give you food for thought!
Can you think of some ways we could begin to "reject the single story" in our lives to regain Adichie's so-called paradise? Feel free to post any comments!
